Sheets - It's not necessary to spend large amounts of money for bed linens. Just because a sheet is expensive, doesn't mean it's of good quality. Most standard bed sheets range in thread count from 120 to 400 threads per inch, and some, more expensive brands, can go as high as 1000 threads per inch. In general, the higher the thread count, the softer the sheet, though, not everyone agrees that they can tell much of a difference. The more you use and wash your sheets, however inexpensive they may be, the softer they become; if you take good care of them they'll last for years.

Sheets can be made from various cottons and cotton/polyester blends or even flannel or silk. The blends out-sell cotton sheets; they wrinkle less and are at the lower end of the price range. For smooth sheets and a strong fabric, try sateen, a cotton fabric that's crafted from long-fiber cotton, then treated to bring out the sheen.

Blankets - If you want an ultra-soft blanket, fleece is the perfect choice. It's a light material that does a great job at keeping you warm. A wool blanket will last forever, but wool can be scratchy against your skin so be aware of that fact. Cotton blankets are the most popular choice. They're light, cheap and easy to care for and store.

Comforters and Duvets - These bed coverings are thick and fluffy and come filled with down, wool, cotton, polyester or a blend of materials. Down covering are the most expensive, they're light but do keep you warm at night. If you tend toward allergies, your best bet would be a polyester comforter. Duvets have been popular in Europe for quite awhile and are a great choice because you slip them into a duvet cover, which is basically a fabric envelope that buttons or closes with a Velcro strip. Your new investment is protected in this way, and you have a built in sheet as well, so there's no need to add a top sheet to your bed. Making the bed will be a simple as smoothing out your Duvet.

Bed Skirt - If you put a bed skirt on your box springs, you'll automatically give a clean, modern look to your bed and will gain hidden storage underneath. Bed skirts help to keep dust from collecting under the bed and also create a new space where you can tuck extra items out of sight.
